Where to Spray Cologne (and How Much to Use)

The right spots and the right number of sprays make the difference between smelling great and smelling too much.

The best spots

Aim for warm pulse points: the sides of the neck, the chest, the inner wrists and behind the ears. Warmth helps fragrance project gently through the day.

How many sprays?

Two to four sprays is right for most colognes. Strong scents like Le Male Elixir or Dior Sauvage need fewer, light fresh scents can take one or two more.

Spray from a short distance

Hold the bottle a few inches away so the mist spreads evenly instead of pooling in one spot.

Office vs. night out

For work, one or two sprays on the chest under your shirt keeps it close. For a night out, add a spray to the neck for more projection.

Mistakes to avoid

Don't rub your wrists, don't spray directly on a white shirt, and don't keep adding sprays because you can't smell it. Your nose gets used to your own scent quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How many sprays of cologne is too much?

If people can smell you from across the room, it's too much. For most colognes, two to four sprays is plenty.

Should I spray cologne on my clothes?

A light mist on clothing can help it last, but spray skin first and test fabric on a hidden spot.
